New Coaches Affect on New Team


Robert Saleh

New York Jets

Robert Saleh was hired as head coach of the New York Jets on January 14, 2021. Mike LaFleur was hired on January 21, 2021 to serve as the Jets offensive coordinator. In 2015-2016 LaFleur was the Falcons offensive assistant and helped WR Julio Jones to finish the season second in the NFL with 1409 receiving yards in 2016. In 2019 as the 49ers pass game coordinator LaFleur lead the 49ers to have 13 players have at least one touchdown reception which tied an NFL record. LaFleur also helped TE George Kittle to become the first TE and 5th player in 49ers franchise history to have multiple 1000 yards seasons. “It all starts with the run game for us, which sets up the pass” LaFleur said of his offensive philosophy.


Urban Meyers Jacksonville Jaguars

Urban Meyers was hired as head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars on January 14, 2021. Darrell Bevell was hired on January 21, 2021 to serve as the Jaguars offensive coordinator. Darrell Bevell was the Green Bay Packers QB coach from 2003-2005 and in 2004 Green Bay set a team record with (4449) net passing yards and finished 3rd in the NFL in total offense. In 2005 the Packers lead the NFL in competitions (383) and attempts (626) both of which were team records. From 2006-2010 Bevell was the offensive coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings ranked 4th in the NFL with 4.51 rushing average, 5th with 10646 rushing yards and 84 rushing touchdowns and 7th with 2363 rushing attempts. In Adrian Peterson’s first 4 seasons (all under Bevell) he rushed for at least 1200 yards and 10 touchdowns each season. In 2011-2017 as the Seahawks offensive coordinator they totaled 14773 rushing yards (2nd in the NFL). They averaged 29.7 rushing attempts per game (3rd most in the NFL). As the Lions offensive coordinator Bevell lead the Lions to be ranked 10th in passing yards per game in both 2019 (243.8) and 2020 (256.5).


Arthur Smith

Atlanta Falcons

Arthur Smith was hired as head coach of the Atlanta Falcons on January 15, 2021. In 2019 in Arthur Smiths first season as Titans offensive coordinator Tennessee lead the NFL in red zone efficiency (75.6%), 3rd in rushing offense (138.9 yards per play) and 4th in yards per play (6.12). The last 2 seasons with Smith as offensive coordinator the Titans have been great in the red zone with an efficiency of 75.6%(2019) and 75.0%(2020) are the 4th (2019) and 5th (2020) best single seasons marks since 2000. Tennessee lead the league in red zone touchdown percentage (75.2%), 5th in points per game (27.9) and were 5th in total offense (379.6). They also were the second best ranked rushing attack in the NFL (153.5 yards per game).

Dave Ragone was hired on January 21, 2021 to serve as the Falcons offensive coordinator. In 2018 Ragone lead Mitchell Trubisky to a passer rating of 120.0 or more in 4 games which were the most in Bears single-season history. In 2018-2019 Ragone helped Trubisky to have back to back 3000 passing yards seasons a feat accomplished only twice in Bears franchise history.


Brandon Staley

Los Angeles Chargers

Brandon Staley was hired as head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers on January 17, 2021. Joe Lombardi was hired on January 25, 2021 to serve as the Chargers offensive coordinator. Head coach Brandon Staley has pledged to build his offense around QB Justin Herbert's strengths. If this is the case the Chargers have the right guy in Joe Lombardi as he has helped QB Drew Brees set numerous passing records. Brees has set records for passing for more than 5000 yards 5 times (4 times with Lombardi as QB coach) and the record for ( now broken) most passing yards in a single season 5476 in 2011. Brees also completed 69.9% of his passes for 44278 yards and 338 touchdowns with 116 interceptions which was good for a 104.6 passer rating during Lombardi’s tender. Joe Lombardi has compared Chargers RB Austin Ekeler to Alvin Kamara, Reggie Bush and Darren Sproles. Lombardi has had a history of using RBs as receivers out of the backfield.


Dan Campbell

Detroit Lions

Dan Campbell was hired as head coach of Detroit Lions on January 20, 2021. Anthony Lynn was hired on January 23, 2021 to serve as the Lions offensive coordinator. In 2009-2013 as Jets RB coach Lynn lead the Jets run game to produce an NFL leading 137.0 yards per game. Lynn helped RB Chris Ivory in 2013 to establish a Jets record 833 rushing yards on 182 carries. Lynn was the Bills RB during the 2015-2016 season. During his time in Buffalo Lynn lead the Bills to have the top rushing attack in the NFL. Dan Campbell has said that he wants to use Lions RB D’Andre Swift as a slot receiver this season.


Nick Sirianni Philadelphia Eagles

Nick Sirianni was hired as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles on January 21, 2021. In 2017 Sirianni assisted the Chargers offense to the top ranked passing offense (276.9 yards per game) in the NFL. In 2020 as Colts offensive coordinator Sirianni lead the offense to the 10th most total yards per game and RB Jonathan Taylor was 3rd among the league leaders in rushing yards with 1169 yards. In Siriannis's 3 seasons as Colts offensive coordinator the Colts ranked 6th in third-down conversations(43.4%), 7th in red zone touchdown efficiency (63.9%) and 8th in offensive points per game (24.4).

Shane Steichen was hired on January 25, 2021 to serve as the Eagles offensive coordinator. In 2019 for 8 games as Chargers interim offensive coordination Steichen lead the Chargers to be 5th in total yards per game (384.3), 6th in passing yards per game (272.1), 7th in third-down conversions (42.7%) and yards per play (5.9). He also helped QB Justin Herbert to set NFL rookie records in competitions and passing touchdowns while producing the second-most passing yards by a rookie in league history. Herbert also recorded Top 10 finishes in competitions (4th, tied), passing yards (6th) and passing touchdowns (10th). In 2020 Steichen's first full season as Chargers offensive coordinator they were the 9th ranked offense (382.1 yards per game), 6th in passing yards per game (270.6) and 9th in third-down efficiency (44.2%).


David Cully

Houston Texans

David Cully was hired as head coach of the Houston Texans on January 27, 2021. Tim Kelly was hired on January 30, 2021 to serve as the Texans offensive coordinator. In 2016 as offensive line coach Kelly helped the offensive line pave the way for RB Lamar Miller. Miller became just the 4th player in Texans history to eclipse 1000 yards on the ground. In 2017 the Texans scored 30 or more points six times which tied a franchise record. They also passed for the 3rd most passing touchdowns in a single season in Texans franchise history (28). Houston also had the most 25-plus yard competitions in a single season in Texans franchise history (38). In 2019 the Texans tied the team record for most overall touchdowns scored (46) in a single season. They also set the franchise record for highest red zone touchdown percentage (64.2%) and fewest three-and-outs (24). Houston also tallied 27 receptions of 30-or-more yards which was tied for 3rd best in the NFL.
