New Coaches Affect on New Team


Nathaniel Hackett

Denver Broncos


Nathaniel Hackett was hired as the 18th head coach of the Denver Broncos on January 27, 2022. Through the 2019-2021 seasons the Packers offenses finished between 12th and 17th in rushing attempts, once finishing in the Top 10 in rushing yards and touchdowns.They finished inside the Top 10 in passing yards and were top five in touchdowns in each of the past two seasons. (2020-2021) Hackett’s offenses have finished inside the top two in the NFL in rushing attempts and yards multiple times (as Bills and Jags OC). In his three seasons with the Packers, (2019-2021) they threw the ball on 58% of their plays, with 21% going to RBs, 57% to WRs and 17% to tight ends. Hackett said during his introductory press conference that he expects to install an offensive system that features the outside zone run game, the play-action pass and deep shots down the field. Justin Outten was hired to serve as the Broncos offensive coordinator on February 2, 2022. Last season Outten helped Robert Tonyan tie a franchise record for the most touchdown receptions by a tight end. In 2019, the TE group helped the Packers score 18 rushing touchdowns, which ranked seventh in the league.


Mike McDaniels

Miami Dolphins


Mike McDaniels was hired as the 14th head coach of the Miami Dolphins on February 6, 2022. As San Francisco's run game coordinator from 2018-20 the 49ers were fifth in the NFL in rushing, averaging 127.0 yards per game, despite having a different leading rusher in all three seasons. The Niners threw just 52% of the time, the fourth fewest in the NFL. Of those passes, 19% went to RBs, 57% to receivers and 20% to tight ends. In 2021, McDaniel’s lone season as an offensive coordinator, the 49ers ranked 29th in pass attempts, but 12th in yards and 14th in touchdowns. They were seventh in the NFL in total offense (375.7 yards per game) and 13th in scoring offense (25.1 points per game). San Francisco was a offense that was balanced, ranking seventh in rushing (127.4) and 12th in passing (248.3). On the ground they thrived, ranking fifth in attempts and touchdowns and seventh in rushing yards. They had two or more running backs utilized 25 percent of the time, second only to New England. San Francisco called designed screen passes 12 percent of the time, 10th in the NFL. They used motions and shifts 82 percent of the time, leading the NFL. The offensive scheme is anchored by the "wide zone" play, a horizontal run play that attempts to stretch the defense enough to find a vertical running seam. Think about those times you've seen a running back gliding laterally to a specific point, planting a foot and accelerating upfield. That's the base play. The Dolphins figure to use zone blocking concepts - all of the linemen move in unison to attack the defensive front. Frank Smith was hired to serve as the Dolphins offensive coordinator on February 14, 2022.



Brian Daboll

New York Giants


Brian Daboll was hired as the 20th head coach of the New York Giants on January 28, 2022. In Daboll’s eight years as an OC, his offenses finished in the top six in rushing attempts in five of his first six seasons. They routinely finished inside the top 10 in rushing yards. The past two seasons(2020-2021), Buffalo finished inside the top 10 in passing yards and touchdowns. In the past two seasons (2020-2021) with the Bills, 18% of passes went to RBs, with 61% going to receivers and 18% to tight ends. In 2021 the Bills finished third in the NFL with 28.4 points a game and fifth with 381.9 yards a game. Mike Kafka was hired to serve as the Giants offensive coordinator on February 3, 2022.




Doug Peterson Jacksonville Jaguars


Doug Peterson was hired as the 7th head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars on February 3, 2022. With Philly, Pederson's offenses finished inside the Top 12 in scoring in each of his first four seasons. The Eagles finished just one time outside the Top 10 in pass attempts. Three of the five seasons the Eagles finished 12th or better in passing touchdowns. Pederson's offenses finished inside the Top 10 in rushing attempts three times as well in his five seasons. Philadelphia never finished better than 13th in rushing touchdowns and we often saw multiple backs split time. In his five seasons, the Eagles passed the ball on 60% of their plays with 17% of passes going to RBs, 48% to receivers and 32% to tight ends. Press Taylor was hired to serve as the Jaguars offensive coordinator on February 10, 2022.



Josh McDaniels

Las Vegas Raiders


Josh McDaniels was hired as 22nd the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders on January 30, 2022. In 12 seasons as offensive coordinator, McDaniels guided the Patriots offense to eight top-10 rankings, including the NFL's No. 1 ranked offense in 2007, 2012 and 2017. McDaniel’s offenses ranked inside the Top 10 in passing attempts in all but two years since 2012. The Patriots finished inside the Top 10 in rushing attempts in four years straight and five of the last six. Those offenses have been inside the Top 10 in rushing TDs in every season since 2012 and inside the Top 12 in every year in rushing yards. Mick Lombardi was hired to serve as the Raiders offensive coordinator on February 12, 2022.



Lovie Smith

Houston Texans


Lovie Smith was hired as the 5th head coach of the Houston Texans on February 7, 2022. Pep Hamilton was hired to serve as the Texans offensive coordinator on February 8, 2022. Last season under Hamilton, the Texans ranked 28th in the NFL in passing offense, averaging just 194.4 yards per game through the air. As the Colts OC from 2013 to 2015 Pep Hamilton lead the Colts to finish in the Top 10 in passing attempts and in 2014 they led the league in passing attempts, yards, and TDs.



Kevin O’Connell Minnesota Vikings


Kevin O’Connell was hired as the 10th head coach of the Minnesota Vikings on February 16, 2022. In 2021 O’Connell, led the Rams to finish ninth in total offense (372.1 yards per game), second in plays of 50-plus yards (10), fourth in yards per play (5.98) and eighth in offensive touchdowns (51). O’Connell’s offenses have finished inside the Top-12 in passing attempts the past two years. This year finishing fifth in passing yards and second in touchdowns. Wes Phillips was hired to serve as the Vikings offensive coordinator on February 21, 2022.



Dennis Allen

New Orleans Saints


Dennis Allen was hired as the 17th head coach of the New Orleans Saints on February 7, 2022. Pete Carmichael Jr. was retained to serve as the Saints offensive coordinator on February 16, 2022. Carmichael has been in that role with the Saints since the 2009 season. Carmichael has had an offensive attack that has been ranked first in the National Football League in yardage in six seasons and in the top ten each campaign from 2006-19. During this period of Carmichael's tenure on the New Orleans coaching staff, the club's 14-year streak of finishing in the top 10 in offense was the third-longest since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger.




Matt Eberflus

Chicago Bears

Matt Eberflus was hired as the 17th head coach of the Chicago Bears on January 27, 2022. Luke Getsy was hired to serve as the Bears offensive coordinator on January 30, 2022. Luke Getsy has been an offensive coordinator once and it was at the college level at Mississippi State. In 2018 MSU passed 54% of the time and ran 46%. They did throw a deep pass on 23% of their plays which ranked 30th out of 233 teams that season. They ranked 39th in pass yards per attempt (6.9) 96th in screen passes (14%) and 68th on play-action passes (33%). They offense also ran 11 personnel (three WR sets) 98% of the time, that was the fifth most that season. The Bulldogs rank No. 2 in the SEC in rushing offense and yards per carry.
